I have a problem. Whenever I go out in the sun I turn into a bright red lobster almost instantly. It seems like I could walk outside to wave to my neighbor and then immediately I am burned.
But one weekend I stayed outside in the pool for about five hours without protection, which was relaxing, but not the smartest thing for me to do. Turning into a lobster after being outside is just part of the pasty girl lifestyle. However, we prefer to be called porcelain white, it sounds nicer than pasty. 😉
Of course, the first step to keeping your skin healthy is using a safe and non-toxic SPF- which I have yet to find, hence the lobster skin. In the past I’d just deal with the peeling and hurting skin, and maybe use some aloe vera gel to soothe my skin. However, now that I’ve been using essential oils and other natural remedies to keep my body healthy, I’ve started using this soothing lotion when I spend too much time outside!
This recipe, like all of the other essential oil recipes I use, is very easy. You’ll need:
- 20 drops Lavender essential oil
- 10 drops Peppermint essential oil
- ½ cup Coconut oil- not melted!
- 2 TBSP Jojoba Oil
- Whip the coconut oil and jojoba oil together for about five minutes with your hand mixer set on medium or low.
- Once the oil is whipped and smooth, add the essential oils.
- Using a spatula fold over the coconut oil mixture to combine the oils together. You could use your hand mixer for this part, but because mixer blades are kind of a pain to clean up and you can NEVER get all of your mixture out of the little cracks and crevices of the beaters, I didn’t use them.
- Transfer the soothing lotion to a glass jar and store in the fridge to keep from melting in the summer heat. Plus, the cool sensation of the lotion soothes skin even more!
For the first three or four days after my incident I applied the soothing lotion to the red area when I got home from work.
After using this soothing lotion I noticed a very quick reduction in the redness and pain, and there was very minimal peeling, and by minimal I mean a tiny bit of flaking on the most red areas and none on the rest of my skin.
Another added benefit of this lotion is that coconut oil and jojoba oil both have natural SPF- along with other carrier oils, so your skin will be protected more after you apply this!
I absolutely love that every season I find more and more uses for my essential oils. In the summer they work so well outdoors for garden pests, to keep flying pests away, and even work well for your pups if they get smelly and itchy. Of course, this is on top of my normal daily uses for these all-natural and pure oils (including my hair spray, face wash, all-purpose cleaner, and about a million other items!).
