I was contacted by Modernize.com recently to collaborate on a contributor post for the blog, so today I am bringing you a space saving post brought to you by the writers at Modernize!
“Modernize is a place to gather ideas and see how others have transformed their homes. It’s for those who’ve just begun to think about what they want their new kitchen to look like, those who wonder what kind of siding and color will add the most value, those who want to know if running their home on solar energy is even a possibility. Modernize is where you come to get inspired, see what’s possible, and connect with a professional who will make your dream home a reality.”
Finding extra rooms in your home for guests and an office can be daunting — most people just don’t have the extra space to create a dedicated space for a work area and for visitors. So that is why it is such a good fit to combine the two in one room. With space and functionality concerns, being creative with the design of your home office/ guest room is a must.

Clever Closet
With limited space, use what you have available to you in the room already. This includes closet space. This office is neatly tucked in to a former closet in such a way that it appears to have been built-in as a custom niche. This arrangement leaves plenty of room for a bed and other furniture for guests and the organized built-ins decrease clutter making the room very serene and inviting.
View From the Top
Another great use of existing space, this room features a lovely bay window which has a desk built in to it. Having a window in front of your work area creates a calming and welcoming environment never lacking in inspiration. The cozy bed welcomes guests and they won’t get the feeling that the desk is taking over the room. The layout of this guest room and office is a great option for someone who uses the desk for paying bills, managing the family and using the computer to daily tasks.
Smart Separation
If square footage is less of an issue in your room, consider dividing the space into two recognizable areas. This well-planned office is separated tastefully by a bookcase open to both sides. Nothing about this room is cramped or stuffy. It is a perfect setup for someone who works from home but has guests regularly who need their own space as well.
Secret Sleeper
For the home office that only sees visitors on occasion, a Murphy bed may be the best choice. This beautiful example is integrated seamlessly into the office furniture. It is simple to stow away when not in use, while maintaining a huge step up above the old blow-up mattress or sofa sleeper options. An office like this easily maintains its primary focus as a work place and yet acts as a fully functional bedroom when guests arrive.
Private Retreat
When you are serious about your work from home space and still like the ability to “go” to work, a tiny house or shed conversion may be the answer. Guests can enjoy the space as well, particularly those who are able to stay for longer visits. Having a space to themselves keeps tensions on an even keel making the visit much more enjoyable.
Whatever the space you have allows, whether it is a tiny corner office or a hideaway bed, merging the two rooms is a smart use of space and can be a joy to use for all parties involved.
