Originally I was going to call this post “Dollar Store Pumpkin Makeover” and show ya’ll how you can cheaply and cutely (is that a word? Well, it is now) make ugly pumpkins look better. My plan was derailed when I went to the Dollar Stores in town and couldn’t find any pumpkins at all. Either everyone in town has stolen my ideas to shop the Dollar Store first for holiday decor, or I started shopping a bit too early for pumpkins (which I doubt since there was Christmas decor this summer at Hobby Lobby).
Either way, I ended up spending $5 a bag on these assorted pumpkins/gourds at Michael’s for this project, which was a bit much for me, but I needed my pumpkins, ya’ll!
Supplies:
- Assorted pumpkins
- Glitter
- Chalky Finish Spray Paint in Cream
- Spray Adhesive
- Spray Sealer
To start off with I used BBQ skewers to hold my pumpkins up while I spray painted them. I did this for the big pumpkins, but for the little ones I just held the stem (and forgot to put on gloves, oops) and sprayed them with two light coats of the paint then let dry.
After dried and perfectly coated I grabbed my glitter- in gold and bronze- and my spray adhesive and added glitter. For more controlled and precise patterns (half and half, polka dots, stripes, any other pattern that takes too much patience and glitter, etc) you could use Mod Podge and tape, I really just went for a “mist” of glitter on some and random glitter on others.
To make things easier and less messy, although nothing is clean when working with glitter, I had a few plates with paper on top sitting out to collect any fallen glitter from my pumpkins.
After I sprayed the adhesive I took the paper with glitter on it and shook it over the pumpkin. Then I alternated back and forth between paper pieces to keep reusing the same glitter until it was gone. Once the pumpkin was glittered how I liked I shook it out and lightly tapped it on the plate to get excess off.
I also got a nice coat of paint, adhesive, and glitter all over my hands. Someone really needs to remind me to wear gloves when I do these projects.
I glittered all of the pumpkins first then went back and did a light seal (mostly over the glittered part) to keep my house from looking a little too fabulous all of the time. 😉
I had enough pumpkins to spread all around the house in various spots, some in baskets, some grouped together, and some Lone Rangering it on their own. And now my house is pumpkin-tastic (another made up word, I just can’t stop)! This gold topped cutie is already my favorite, even with the accidental glitter on top of the stem.
This means it is almost time for my indoor fall home tour soon (my outdoor tour is over here!) and I can’t wait to share my full decor scheme with ya’ll!

Very cute idea! I like the “sprinkle” of glitter you’ve got going on these, rather than a full on FAB, haha! Thanks for linking up to Merry Monday! I’ve pinned this!

Haha, yes, the sprinkle of FAB is just enough for me, although I did accidentally fully “glitterize” one.
