I like to think of myself as the queen of auctions- I always seem to find the diamonds in the rough! This was definitely a diamond in the very dirty, sad rough. This poor chair was unloved by everyone at the auction, so much that no one was bidding on it and they were getting ready to pass it up (ie- throw it in the trash or give it to someone) when I, feeling bad for the poor girl and knowing I can fix her up, came along and happily bid $1. The poor chair was covered in cracks and was falling apart.I started off by washing off the chair and doing a light sanding- which removed lots of dirt! Then I applied some wood glue to the back of the chair where it was falling apart and held it all together with my handy dandy homemade clamps!I also added some wood filler to the top where there were some cracks and gaps and let everything dry overnight.
The next day I applied a light layer of Valspars Dove White I bought at Lowe’s for $2.99 for a sample. Looking better already!
I applied about 3 layers of paint total. Some areas weren’t taking to the paint to well so I had to do a few extra layers on a few spots. And just because I love before and afters- here is another one!
I’m still working on a new cushion for this chair I’m just having the hardest time making a decision. But I definitely need to make a decision fast, because I don’t know how long I can live with this gross fabric!
I adore everything in the Waverly line from Joann’s but I’m particularly in love with these for various reasons:
These are actually from the Williamsburg line at Joann’s , but I still love them!
I’m on the fence as to if I should upholster the cushion in a bright and eye catching fabric, or go neutral and add some color with a pillow.
What do you think? Which fabric choice would help make this $1 chair even better? Have you had any amazing finds lately? I just picked up some more amazing finds this weekend and can’t wait to share them!

What an awesome project! I really like the middle fabric on the top row. It looks like it would work well with the curtains in your picture.

Thank you! I really like all of the choices, it is SO hard to make a decision! But that one is definitely a favorite that I’ve had my eye on working with for a while.
I just checked out your link party for today, there is some great stuff there.

This looks so great! I really like the blue dandelion looking fabric, the first one you have shown from Joann’s. I love redoing cheap finds! Great Work! I’m visiting from Fabulously Frugal Thursday Linky party.

Thank you Amanda! I just wish there was one universal print that matched everything! It’s so hard to find a bold and fun print that matches my thrifted/eclectic/vintage/rustic/constantly changing style. Haha.

Beautiful transformation! All the fabrics are beautiful but I especially love the tan and white leaf pattern fabric in the Waverly section bottom right corner.

What an amazing fabric selection - I want all of them!
If you decide to reupholster the cushion, do a tutorial please. I’m working up the nerve to reupholster our dining room chairs because after having a child, the white damask is looking quite… Tired.
Thank you for sharing this at the Thank Goodness It’s Thursday party, Kristina.
