Nine times out of ten I’ll choose to make something homemade rather than buy it. Whether it be an entryway table, wall décor, or a beauty or health product, I’d rather whip something up in my kitchen or garage than get it off the store shelves. this is so especially true when it comes to health and wellness products. So many items on the market are just not safe and labeled properly- and with diseases, illnesses, and chemicals on the rise, I barely trust stores these days to be truthful and provide truly natural and safe products.
I normally whip up a recipe in the kitchen and proudly use homemade products, but sometimes that just doesn’t work. Sometimes it is way better to buy a product than to make it.
I know this probably sounds like blasphemy coming from an all-natural health and wellness hippie like myself, but hear me out.
Last fall I tried to make homemade dish soap. I followed (supposedly) tried and true recipes I found from fellow essential oil lovers to a T. I tried about 4 or 5 different recipes and none of them would work. I tried my own concoction. It still didn’t work.
Sure, my dishes would get clean enough, but all of our glassware had a filmy finish to it once it dried and some of our ceramic plates felt a bit greasy no matter HOW much we rinsed and scrubbed. Not to mention that the water never got very sudsy- but murky- something that bothered Cyle more than me. I was fine with non-sudsy water if the dishes would just get freaking clean!
So we gave up and went back to using a certain blue dish soap that is advertised as being so safe that it is used on animals in oil spills. I was so irritated that we had to go back to a product that didn’t have a great or safe ingredient rating on EWC. I knew it wasn’t a good product to use in our home.
But then I remembered, shortly before I tried the homemade dish soap fiasco, Young Living came out with a new line of products- and guess what one of them was.
Hallelujah! I was saved!
And after trying this soap and having it run out before I could order more, I will say that I will never ever ever go back.
A similar situation happened with my homemade deodorant that I blogged about a little while ago. It worked perfectly fine for months, but the past two months something just stopped working for me, I am not sure if it was because I made it in such a big batch and it got quite melty and solidified a few times, or if I am sweating a lot more at the gym so it just isn’t working, or what, but recently that hasn’t been working for me either.
And when I made homemade shampoo that left my hair really clean but frizzy? I got into the hair care products.
(NOTE: This isn’t to say that none of my (or anyones) homemade products/recipes don’t work, because so many do, these three were just very important ones that didn’t work for me!)
